A psychiatric evaluation is the foundation of effective mental health treatment. Whether you are experiencing symptoms for the first time or have been managing a condition for years, a comprehensive assessment by a qualified psychiatrist provides the clarity needed to develop the right treatment plan. At Elevate Psychiatry in Miami, our board-certified psychiatrists conduct thorough evaluations that consider every aspect of your mental health.
A psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive assessment conducted by a licensed psychiatrist — a medical doctor specializing in mental health. Unlike a brief screening or questionnaire, a full psychiatric evaluation typically takes 60 to 90 minutes and covers your current symptoms, personal and family psychiatric history, medical history, medications, life circumstances, and treatment goals.
Because psychiatrists are medical doctors, they can evaluate both the psychological and biological aspects of your mental health, ordering lab work or medical tests when needed to rule out physical causes of psychiatric symptoms.
Your first appointment at Elevate Psychiatry will include a detailed discussion of your current concerns and what prompted you to seek help, a review of your psychiatric history including any previous diagnoses, medications, or hospitalizations, a thorough medical history review to identify conditions that may affect mental health, questions about family history of mental health conditions, an assessment of your social history including relationships, work, substance use, and life stressors, and a mental status examination that assesses your current thinking, mood, and cognitive functioning.
Based on this comprehensive assessment, your psychiatrist will provide a diagnosis (if applicable), discuss treatment options, and collaborate with you to create a personalized care plan.
A psychiatric evaluation is recommended for anyone experiencing persistent changes in mood such as prolonged sadness, irritability, or mood swings. It is also appropriate if you have anxiety that interferes with daily functioning, difficulty concentrating or completing tasks suggesting ADHD, thoughts of self-harm or hopelessness, sleep disturbances, unexplained physical symptoms that may have a psychiatric component, or a need for medication management for an existing condition.
You do not need a referral to schedule a psychiatric evaluation at Elevate Psychiatry. Many of our patients are self-referred, while others come through recommendations from their primary care physician or therapist.
A common question is how a psychiatric evaluation differs from a therapy session. While therapists focus on talk therapy and behavioral strategies, psychiatrists are medical doctors who can diagnose conditions, prescribe and manage medications, and assess the biological aspects of mental health. Many patients benefit from both — psychiatric care for diagnosis and medication management, and therapy for ongoing emotional support and skills development.
Our Miami psychiatrists evaluate and treat a wide range of conditions including depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, PTSD, OCD, panic disorder, substance use disorders, personality disorders, and psychotic disorders. For treatment-resistant conditions, we also offer advanced therapies such as TMS therapy and Spravato.
